Ellen first appears in her parents 1870 Centre Twp., Perry County,PA, census, age 10 months, as Barbara E. Shoff with parents George and Hannah.
Her father was a civil war veteran - Co. F, 208th PA Infantry - and died 1872. Both she and her mother applied for pensions benefits in 1891: her mother as Hannah Baker, widow, and herself as Ellen Adams, minor child.
On her marriage application, Ellen gives her mother's name as Hannah Baker. One can conclude that Baker was her mother's married name at the time and also when the pension application was made.

Mrs Allen {sic} Adams, of 143 East South Street, widow of Joseph Adams, died at 4 o'clock this morning at the home of her grandson, Harry Bowers, of Carlisle Star Route at the age of 77 years.
She is survived by two sons, William H Adams, Carlisle, and John M Adams, Mechanicsburg; three daughters, Mrs Annie Danaby, Carlisle; Mrs Mary Bowers, Carlisle Star Route, and Mrs George Herman, Churchtown; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Lutz Funeral Home, with burial in Kutz's Church Cemetery. Friends may call tomorrow night at the funeral home.
