United States Supreme Court Associate Justice. Born in Cecil County Maryland, he attended public school, graduated from Kenyon College Ohio, in 1832 and with a law degree from Yale University in 1835. He also served as a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives in 1845 and presided a judge over the 8th Circuit Court of Illinois (1848-62). On October 17, 1862, he received an appointment to a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court from President Abraham Lincoln. In March 1877, he resigned from the U.S. Supreme Court when he elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate. The Senate elected Davis as President Pro Tempore and after his term in 1883, he retired from civic duty. He died at his home in Bloomington, Illinois, at age 71.
