We are again called upon to chronicle the "passing away" of one of our oldest and most highly esteemed neighbors. Rebecca J. Groves was born in Morgan county, Ohio, Oct. 7th, 1829, and after several months affliction died at her home in Dungannon Saturday morning, Jan. 26th, 1907, aged 77 years, 4 months and 20 days. While quite a young woman, she was married to Amos Shinn, who was born on the old National Road, Virginia, in the year 1818, and who preceded her to the great beyond Feb. 4th, 1900. Mr. Shinn came with his parents to Senecaville, Ohio, when a boy of six years and when twenty years of age, came with them to Jackson township and settled within a half mile of where they "walked together" for almost sixty years. They were among our best and most trustworthy citizens and reared to manhood and womanhood twelve children, nine sons and three daughters, as follows: Asa, of Pittsburg, Pa.; C.F. of Lowell, Oh., R.F.D.; David W., Casey, Ia.; H.S. (deceased), Kansas City, Mo., Vesta Davis, Warner, Ohio; Rebecca Lowe, Dungannon, Ohio; Amos L. of South Dakota; Mrs. C.F. Fairhurst, Crooked Tree, Ohio; Walter, Latrobe, Pa.; J.F., Cleveland, Ohio; Oscar, (deceased) Dungannon, Ohio; L.O., Dungannon, Ohio. Mother Shinn's obsequies were conducted by Rev. E.H. Hammond and the sermon preached at the Williamson M.E. church from these words: "O death where is they sting", "O grave where is they victory," 1st Cor. 15:55, and all that was mortal was laid to rest beside her husband, in the cemetery nearby. To the bereft we extend our deepest sympathy.
