Sarah Jane Shaw was born in Carroll Township, Reynolds County, Missouri, the daughter of Henry Franklin Shaw Jr. and Susan Gant.

On January 22, 1902 in Reynolds County, Missouri she married James Pendleton Christopher Columbus Barton, known to many as "Clum" Barton.

She died on February 15, 1922 at the age of 39 of pirerfiral fever caused by childbirth. Infant Barton did not survive and was buried with her.

At the time of death she was survived by her husband and seven daughters and one son:

April 25, 1989 - Below is a note written by her granddaughter Jewell (Stephens) Bell:

Her grave is unmarked but she was buried in the Mounds cemetery outside of Caruthersville, Mo. on Highway "D" one and a half miles off of "U" toward Cottonwood Point. On right side of "D" behind a brick house and just across "D" from a high Indian Mound.

My mother, Rachel Stephens, said she had been told that her dad planted a silver-leaf-maple tree on her grave. I took mom and we looked for the grave in April of 1989 and could not spot a tree of that description. The grave yard was grown up with small fig trees, honeysuckle and briars. We went to the H.S. Smith Funeral home in Caruthersville and met with a man that was a 3rd Generation in the business and was very knowlegeable about the area called Fike. No records were kept of who was buried where in the cemetery. A Mr. Clinton Cunningham owned this high spot on his farm and let people bury their dead there. If they ever excavated the cemetery that might help to identify our great grandmother, but that would probably never happen. I would like to find a place where I could place a stone, but the only thing that could have been done is to say " somewhere in this cemetery lies..." and it was such a mess I am hesitant to do that. Mr. Cunningham sold the land to a lady whose last name was Moody. She was not home the day mom and grandma was there.

Jewell with daughter Gaye went to grave site of Sarah Jane Shaw Barton today. We got an address of 873 Rear State Hwy D for the cemetery by using the home address of Mrs. Geneva Moody, owner of the land. Mrs. Moody was very elderly and very nice. She told us that she and her husband had purchased the land from Mr. Cunningham 51 years ago. Her husband James Moody passed away in about 1984. She told us the story that when they first purchased the land that the cemetery being grown up and not taken care of really bothered her husband James so for the first two or three times he cleared and cleaned it all up. After that he hired someone to keep it maintained however she explained that it got to exspensive for them and they had to stop. Gaye tried to walk into the cemetery but didn't get far until she couldn't go any further, as you can see by the recent photo's of me standing in front of the cemetery. The cemetery is very easy to locate, it is on the right side of the road across from a large Indian mound on the left side. You will see the Indian Mound right as you make the S curve. From Interstate 55 take the Dyersburg Exit on 155. Go to the Hwy U exit and go south about 1/4 of a mile to the intersection of Hwy U and D. Make a left on Hwy D and it is only about 1 mile. The cemetery is on private property so you have to ask permission at the brick home that sits back off the road to enter. The cemetery is right at the edge of the property owners back yard.

On the same day we visited the Historical Society's research room at the Caruthersville Library. It is open on Monday and Tuesdays only from 1:00 to 3:00pm. There we searched for obituaries of Sarah Jane and her son Edgar but did not locate any. They had record of the cemetery with very few names but Sarah Jane was not amoung them because her grave was unmarked. All the volunteers there knew of the cemetery and where it was located.

Gaye and I went to the Malden Marble Works where Lester & Rachel Stephens, my parents, purchased the stone for Rachel's father James C Barton. Presently Grandpa Barton is buried along side of his son Edgar at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Kennett, Dunklin, Missouri. Since there is no where to put a stone on Sarah Jane's grave at the Mounds Cemetery we have decided to erect a memorial stone for her in between Grandpa Barton and Edgar at the Oak Ridge Cemetery. To do this I purchased 2 stones identical to James C's stone, one for Edgar and one for Sarah. All three stones will be mounted on one long base and centered between the 2 exsisting graves. This should be completed withing 3 to 4 weeks. Inscribed on the back of Sarah Jane's stone will be: Buried in unmarked grave in Mounds Cemetery near Caruthersville, Missouri. Inscribed on the front above her name will be the word, Cenotaph which means monument erected in honor of a person whose remains are buried elsewhere. Edgars present stone will be layed flat as a footer on his grave. It is very old but I just hated to dispose if it.
