A POPULAR YOUNG MAN PASSES AWAY
This community was grieved to learn of the untimely and unexpected death of one its most popular and handsome young men, Fred W. Allen, which occurred at the family residence, on Elliott street, Monday at 4 o'clock.
Following is a brief biography of his life and death:
Fred. W. Allen, son of Judge J. C. and Julia A. Allen was born at Palestine, Ill., March 9th, 1867, and died in Olney, March 22,1897, age 30 years and 13 days.
He came to Olney with his parents in the fall of 1876, where he made his home until he died. His was the first death in a family of seven children. He leaves his parents and three brothers and three sisters surviving him.
He was a clerk in the post office at Olney while his father held that office, and afterwards held the place of a guard in the state treasurer during term of Hon. E. S. Wilson.
When W.F. Beck was appointed post master at Olney, he appointed Fred Allen his chief clerk, which position he held until his health compelled him to quit the office, much to the regret of the partrons of the office.
His death is believed to have been the result of a fall from a bicycle, which injured him about the heart to such an extent as to interfere with its power to throw out sufficient blood to sustain the vital parts of the body. And notwithstanding the utmost care of physicians and careful nursing of family friends, the death messenger could not be stayed.
Funeral services took place this morning at 10 o'clock at the family residence, conducted by Rev. J. O. Hough, followed by interment of his body in the City cemetery.
The City Cemtery is now called Haven Hill.
