Les Hill was born June 1, 1926, in Yenanyoung, Burma to May and George L. Hill and died in Portales, NM, on April 3, 2009. His parents moved back to the U. S. when he was two years old and settled in California. He lived in Los Angeles for several years during the 1930's and then moved to Bakersfield, CA, where he attended high school. He graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Following his honorable discharge, he continued his education at Fresno State University where he graduated with a degree in Geology in 1950.
On October 20, 1951 in Fresno, he was married to Charlotte Bippus. For eight years he was employed by Core Laboratories. During those years they moved numerous times. In 1959, he went to work for the State of California in the Division of Oil and Gas where he oversaw compliance with regulations in the drilling of wells. During that time his home was in Coalinga and later Bakersfield, CA. For about a year he worked for the governor's office in Sacramento.
In 1981, he took an early retirement from the state and became the Lead Oil and Gas Assessor for Kern County, CA. He retired from that position in the early 1990's to enjoy his retirement years traveling the United States. One of the trips he most enjoyed was a 39 day tour of Alaska. The group he traveled with became very close and remained in contact for many years.
Mr. Hill was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Royal Arch, and Knights Templar. He was a Past Master of the lodge in Coalinga, CA, and was currently a member in the lodge in Bakersfield, CA. For many years, he was active in the Blue Lodge and was at one time a Shrine Mason. In addition, he was a 50 year member of the Order of Elks, and a very proud member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Hill was a Registered Geologist in both California and Idaho. His professional memberships included AIPG (American Institute of Professional Geologists) and AAPG (American Association of Professional Geologists). He was an avid reader and also loved to garden.
He is survived by Charlotte, his wife of more than 57 years, currently of Portales, NM; two daughters, Debbie (Marty) Anderson of Quincy, CA, and Linda (Bruce) Linsten of Portales, NM; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Hill-Beal and husband, Jene of Bakersfield, CA; and five grandchildren, Stephanie Anderson, Sarah Anderson, John (Chantel) Webster-Hill, Brent (Jennifer) Hill and Christine (Tydus) Kiger.
