Thomas Johnson was a Methodist missionary to the Shawnee Indians and was a member of the first Kansas Territorial Legislature (before statehood on January 29, 1861.)

The first Shawnee Indian Mission was located in present day Turner, Kansas. The school was open from 1830 until 1839 at which time the Indian Mission was relocated to present day Fairway, Kansas. The Shawnee Indian Mission School opened at it's present location in Fairway, Kansas in October 1839. Children from Shawnee and other tribes lived at the school. Boys and girls were given a well rounded education in addition to farming for boys and domestic skills for girls. In 1854 the manual training aspect of the school was discontinued. By 1858 Thomas turned the school over to his son, Alexander. Thomas was killed at his Kansas City, Missouri home January 2, 1865.

Rev Thomas Johnson The Devoted Indian Missionary Born July 11, 1802 Died Jan 2, 1865 He build his own monument which shall stand in peerless beauty long after this marble shall have crumbled into dust. A monument of good works. The voice at midnight came he started up to hear a marked arrow pointed at his frame he fell but felt no fear servant of God well done praise be him in his employ and while eternal ages pass rest in thy saviors joy.
