Army Sgt. Beard was assigned to the 147th Postal Company, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Wiesbaden, Germany. He died in Al Diwaniyah after running a couple of miles and was in line for a weigh in when he collapsed. Daniel was a 2003 graduate of Seneca Vocational High School in Buffalo, New York. He briefly attended Erie Community College before enlisting in the Army in February 2005. Daniel was proud to be in the Army and was the first in his family to serve in the military - he had recently re-enlisted for four years. In May, 2008, he was deployed to Iraq and on the day he died, he was to take a test to become a noncommissioned officer. He was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant. Daniel was an excellent soldier who was eager and motivated – always with a smile on his face.
