Samuel Martin Bailey, for many years a well-known citizen of Athens residing on the Decatur road, died last Saturday at St. Vincent Hospital, Birmingham, where he had undergone an operation a few days previously.


Mr. Bailey's body was brought to Athens and after funeral services conducted by Bro. M. A. Creel at the home at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon was interred in the City Cemetery, McConnell directing.


Mr. Bailey was born September 17, 1867 in White County, Tennessee and was the son of Mose and Martha Sellers Bailey.


He came to Athens many years ago and made this place his home ever since. He led a quiet, useful life, proving himself a good neighbor, a loyal friend and a devoted husband and father.


Mr. Bailey is survived by his widow, to whom he was married in 1892, the two having celebrated their golden anniversary last year; a son, Sam M. Bailey Jr., of Birmingham; two daughters, Mrs. Grady Leopard of Athens and Mrs. Jerome Lindsay Jr., of Birmingham; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild; three brothers, Thomas Charles Bailey and Jim Bailey; and one sister, Mrs. Mollie Johnson of Tennessee, all of whom have the tenderest sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
