From the Springfield Republican, 24 March 1887:

Death of Edward W. Hubbard
Edward Waite Hubbard of the Republican's staff died of typhoid fever at the Evans house in this city, yesterday morning at 5:30. Mr. Hubbard was the youngest son of William H. and Anna. H. Hubbard, who went from New England to Louisville, Ky., where the late Mr. Hubbard was teacher of a young ladies' school, and where Edward was born January 31, 1864. Edward was graduated from Amherst college in the class of 1885 and worked for a few months upon the Concord (N.H.) People and Patriot. Thence he came to The Republican in February 1886, and had advanced rapidly in usefulness, giving assurance of worthy service in his profession. His untimely death ends a career of unusual promise. His nature was earnest and faithful, serious and sincere; he possessed a rare refinement and grace of manner, with something of reserve besides; his tastes were literary, and he already acquired style in a more than common degree, and wrote verse of finish and beauty. He had an enthusiasm for music, and since coming to Springfield had cultivated his voice and might have become accomplished in vocal art. Mr. Hubbard made some warm friends in the city, who will deeply sympathize with the bereaved mother, who has lived here much of the time of his sojourn, and with his brothers, -- Rev. William H. Hubbard of Auburn, N.Y., for some time pastor of the Second Congregational church at Holyoke, and Rev. Charles F.W. Hubbard of Ellsworth, Me. Both brothers, as well as Mrs. Hubbard, have been with Edward during his sickness. To his associates this comes as an unexpected and severe blow, depriving them of a constantly more prized and fruitful fellowship. There will be prayer with the family at the Evans house at 9 o'clock this morning, and funeral services at the First church chapel at 9:30, which will be conducted by Rev. Michael Burnham and Rev. Dr. S.G. Buckingham. The burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
