Fred Ross Doll 1921 - 2009 Fred Ross Doll died at the Veteran's Hospital in Fresno, CA, on March 2, 2009. He was 87. Born to Fred Charles and Kathryn Elizabeth Doll on July 23, 1921, in Bakersfield, CA, Ross was the oldest of six children. He graduated from Kern County Union High School and Junior College, attended San Diego State and received his degree in Physical Education from Santa Barbara Teachers College. A World War II veteran, he was a forward artillery spotter in the U.S. Marine Corp 3rd Marine Division that served combat duty in the Pacific, including 29 days on Iwo Jima. In 1948, Ross married Virginia Lee Cathcart, and they made Bakersfield their home. Steven Lee Doll was their only child. Ross retired as a journeyman electrician, working out of Local 266 of the IBEW. As an active member of the Libertas-Security Lodge #466 FAAM for over 50 years, he served as Past Master and filled nearly every station in the Lodge. He belonged to the Kern County Shrine Club, Hi Twelve, Mobile Nobles, and joined the Clovis Masonic Lodge after moving to Fresno in 2003. Following his retirement, Ross and Virginia traveled both at home and abroad. He was a golfer, an all around sports fan and armchair quarterback. After 40 years of silence about his war experiences, Ross began to tell his story. He gave several interviews and recorded his memories, contributing his voice to the preservation of an historical era. Ross was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Kathryn; son, Steven; brother, John Thomas Doll; and sister, Nancy Jane Ackley. He is survived by Virginia, his wife and life partner of 60 years who lives in Fresno; grandson, Kevin Doll and his wife, Christine; and great- grandchildren Zoe, Zachary and Quinn all of Arkansas; daughter-in-law, Michelle Doll of Burrough Valley, CA; brothers, Don Doll and wife, Shirley of California Hot Springs and David Doll and wife, Sandie of Fresno; sister, June Bedford and husband, Paul of Fresno.
