Father Edward Joseph Romagosa, S.J., 84, departed this life at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Center on Saturday April 4th, 2009.

Funeral services were held yesterday at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Grand Coteau, with burial at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau.

He grew up in New Orleans, where he was educated at St. Francis of Assisi School and Jesuit High School. After his graduation from Jesuit in 1941, he entered the Society of Jesus [the Jesuits] at St. Charles College Novitiate in Grand Coteau, LA on August 14 of that year. Following the course of studies in Grand Coteau, Spring Hill College in Mobile, and the College de S. Albert in Louvain, Belgium, he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on August 15, 1954.

Father Romagosa gave distinguished service in three areas of Jesuit apostolic activity. In the work of education and formation of Jesuits, he instructed young Jesuits in English, Greek, and Cultural History at Grand Coteau from 1957 to 1970. During the period of 1970-1982, he gave himself to the pastoral apostolate, serving as pastor at St. Rita Church in Dallas, and Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Coteau and as a replacement pastor for Lafayette Diocese priests on sabbatical. Since 1982, he has been a master of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, giving preached retreats at the Maryhill Retreat House in Pineville, LA [1982-84], Montserrat Retreat House in Lake Dallas, Texas [1984-88], Our Lady of the Oaks Retreat House in Grand Coteau [1988-1991], and Manresa House of retreats in Convent, LA [1991-2009]. He was much sought after for personal direction and counsel during all retreats. His prowess as a fisherman was legendary throughout the New Orleans Province of the Jesuits.

As an acknowledgement of Father Romagosa's service as a Jesuit priest, gifts are suggested for the training of future priests or the care of elder Jesuits; gifts may be sent to The Jesuits, 710 Baronne St. Suite B., New Orleans, LA 70113.
