He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Corydon State Bank in 1936 and 1943. In 1950, he was Chairman of the Board of the Harrison County Hospital when the hospital was built and dedicated in January 24, 1950. He was also an officer of the Corydon Crushed Stone and Lime Company, and served as vice president of the LNA&C Railroad.
When the Corydon Rotary Club was organized, Charles was elected to its first board of directors. He was also on the board of the same group in 1948. He was also a member of the Corydon Chamber of Commerce. Charles also served on the board of the Indiana Manufacturers Association, and a member of the National Furniture Manufacturers Association.
Charles was also a Master Mason, and in 1928 had the honor of being one of the men who laid the cornerstone for the new Harrison County Courthouse in a Masonic ceremony. During the early 1930's Charles was the Grand Master of the Pisgah Lodge, Corydon. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and Murat Shrines, in addition to the Order of the Eastern Star.
Charles was also Commander of the Corydon post of the American Legion in 1923 - 1925. He served in the Army during World War I, and attained the rank of sergeant, serving overseas in the Quartermaster Corps.
An active member of the George Rogers Clark Council of the Boy Scouts, Charles received the Silver Beaver award in recognition of his services to the organization. Charles was also a member of the Corydon Methodist Church, and served on its board.
