He served in World War II in the Army eastern theatre under Gen. George S. Patton. He served in four major campaigns, and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant on April 7, 1946.

Before and after the war, Mr. Burdine pursued a long career with the Department of Commerce, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, one of the seven uniformed services. His work took him to numerous sites, including Ethiopia, the Sudan, and Alaska, to complete triangulations that laid the groundwork for the current Global Positioning System used for communication and defense satellites.

Mr. Burdine retired in 1975 after serving several times as location party chief and as the Chief of the Field Operations branch in Rockville, Md.

After his retirement, Mr. Burdine was an active member of the community in Somerset and also was the caretaker for several relatives.
