Joe Davis Bennett was the son of Monroe Clayton Bennett and Josephine "Josie" Townsend Bennett.

He was the grandson of William Burdette Townsend and Flora Martha Kennedy Townsend.

He was the great-grandson of William Bainbridge Kennedy and Elizabeth Curless Kennedy of Brown County, Ohio, briefly of Illinois, then of Douglas County, Kansas.

He was the 2-great-grandson of William Hugh Kennedy and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy of Brown County, Ohio, then Margaret Jane, as a widow, of Douglas County, Kansas.

He was the 3-great-grandson of Jonathan "John" Ralston and Elizabeth "Betsy" Pitzer of Brown County, Ohio.

Most of the Kennedy family left Brown County, Ohio in 1855 after patriarch William Hugh Kennedy died of cholera in Brown County in 1845. A group of about 25 Kennedy relatives migrated together to Douglas County, Kansas, all settling near the Wakarusa River in what is known as the Kennedy Valley. The matriarch of the family, Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy, was the first teacher in the area. Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy’s family came from Scotland.
