During WWII, German POW's were housed near Westminster and worked on area farms. Being treated with respect by Charles and fed well by his wife, Hilda, more POW's always lined up to work on the Hoff farm than were needed.

Charles was a lifelong farmer in the Carroll County area and had a huckster business selling home raised produce in Baltimore and Washington DC.
