Precious Elizabeth (Liz) Looby was born March 3, 1950 in Knox City, Texas the daughter of R. G. and Bettie Tatum Carleton. Elizabeth went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday morning, April 9, 2009 at the age of 59.

Liz is survived by her husband, James F. Looby of Early, Texas, a Son, James C. Looby and wife Amy and grandson James Ryan Looby of Stephenville; Son John T. Looby and wife Catherine of Jacksonville, Florida; Mother Bettie Carleton of Early, Texas, and numerous extended family members. She was preceded in death by her father, R. G. Carleton and brother, Richard M. Carleton.

Elizabeth attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas where she and Jim met and were subsequently married at the First Baptist Church in Brownwood in 1972.

She was primarily a teacher and homemaker. While her husband served for over 20 years in the United States Navy as a Chaplain, Liz volunteered with school counseling programs, sang with the Plantation Singers, a group of Naval Officer's wives in Charleston, South Carolina, sang with numerous Navy Chapel choirs, worked on a Public Affairs Staff at the Naval Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey, coordinating programs for POW-MIA annual observances; wrote for base newspapers, substituted taught for numerous school systems and taught 5th grade children. In addition, she coordinated numerous successful Vacation Bible Schools and women's bible studies and ministries.

Following their move to Early, Texas, Liz helped coordinate the Heart of Texas Christian Women's Job Corps (CWJC), along with Mrs. Betty Evans, a ministry to help women in need, develop job skills and life skills. She did this for four years until her brother's illness forced her to resign her position to help in his care.

Liz was a delightfully kind, sweet, and ministering woman. She had a passion for all people. She was deeply committed to Missions ministries and children's ministries. She completely supported her husband's pastoral and Chaplain Ministries, which took them and their family all over the country and to foreign lands. Theirs was truly a marriage and ministry ordained in heaven. Liz will be sorely missed by all those who knew her. Liz's kind and infectious smile disarmed even the most hardened Sailor or Marine and she had an impact that will be felt for years on into eternity. The world is truly a better place for Liz have graced our presence. Elizabeth's sweet demeanor and disarming smile and infectious personality left lasting impressions on all who had the privilege of knowing her. A short obituary cannot do but a small bit of justice to the wonder of who this woman was, but it certainly can began to convey the enormity of her impact of innumerable lives.

A service of a celebration of her life will be held at 10 am Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Early with the Rev. Don Fawcett officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early. Visitation will be held from 6 - 8 PM on Friday at the funeral home.
