Richard Thomas Gaddis died at Central Suffolk Hospital's Skilled Nursing Facility in Riverhead on May 17. He was born in Rhinebeck, N.Y., on Oct. 15, 1914, to James and Lillian (Thomas) Gaddis. He graduated from Greenport High School and at age 18 was hired at Greenport Yacht and Shipbuilding as a carpenter's apprentice. He worked there for 54 years as a ship joiner and foreman. During his time he built minesweepers that served in World War II. There, he also met the woman who would become his wife, Frances Still, who worked for the Navy as a shipyard secretary. Mr. Gaddis also served during the war as a corporal in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Okinawa. He was a life member and ex-captain of the Greenport Fire Department's Standard Hose Co. Predeceased by his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Sinopoli of Southold, and two granddaughters. Visitation and Greenport Fire Department services were held on Tuesday at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A funeral service was held there on Wednesday, the Rev. Lorraine DeArmitt officiating. Interment with military honors took place at Cutchogue Cemetery.
