Marguerite Helen Conover

Marguerite Helen Conover, 81, passed away, Friday, September 10, 2004, at Columbia Mainland Center Hospital, Texas City TX.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 14, 2004, in the Memorial Room of Broadway Funeral Home, Galveston, TX with Mr. B.J. Schipper, Chaplain of Hospice Care Team, Inc., officiating. Entombment will follow services, Tuesday, at The Mausoleum of Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas. A Gathering for Visitation will be held Monday, September 13, 2004, also in the Memorial Room of Broadway Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday evening, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Marguerite was the sole proprietor, for many years, of several night-time entertainment clubs located here on Galveston Island and more recently in Santa Fe, Texas. Many will remember her friendly hospitality at the island's "Elbow Room" and also at her Santa Fe location, "Marguerite's". She was a caring individual, a person who dedicated herself to hard work and long hours, because she knew that people would be able to enjoy themselves because of it. Perhaps one of Marguerite's greatest enjoyments was being able to help those in need. Her tremendous generosity and unselfish ways were but just a few of the many traits that made her the unique person she was. Marguerite enjoyed people and made many loving and lasting friendships because of her kind and thoughtful ways.

Marguerite is preceded in death by her husband, Ben F. Conover; her parents, Carl and Essie Sheppard; both brothers, John Sheppard and A.W. Johnson and also one of her sisters, Mildred Smith.

She leaves behind many loving memories with her only daughter, Alicia Phanon Thibodeaux and partner, Kaye Penton, of Santa Fe, Texas and her sister, Juanita Smith and husband, Kat, also of Santa Fe, Texas. Sharing in her loss, too, are Marguerite's numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, her extended family of step-children, a host of other loving relatives and many wonderful and loving friends. She will be deeply missed by those that knew her and loved her. Her memories will live on in the many hearts that she leaves behind.

Pallbearers will be Rick Rogers, Jim Capp, Joe Puma, Ed Smith, Bill Hedgepeth and Jeff Simpson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Joe Ordiway, Lowell Applewhite, Bunte Cavasos, Joe Peck, Roland Polk, Andrew Sanchez, Doc Weinert, Randy Rogers and Wayne Johnson.

God saw she was getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around her and whispered, "Come to Me." With tearful eyes her loved ones watched her suffer and saw her fade away. Although they loved her dearly, they could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands to rest. God broke many hearts to prove that He only takes the best.

In her very loving memory may she rest in peace.
