Last Sad Rites for Respected Citizen
Mortal Remains of Coffee Creek Farmer Interred at that Place
Coffee Creek, Aug. 20.--Funeral services for J.W. Hershberger were held Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock at the house and at two o'clock at the church with Lyle Croxford of Great Falls in charge and the Rev. Robt. Gray of the Presbyterian church of Great Falls delivering the sermon.
The Rev. Gray spoke very highly of the life of the deceased. Mrs. Delbert Fiock sang "Lead Kindly Light" and Mr. Croxford sang "In the Garden."
The casket bearers were F.A. Green, G.J. Dickson, E.B. Shaw, R.M. Chamberlain, Jos. Horrall, and Delbert Fiock. There were many beautiful flowers which demonstrated in a small way the high esteem in which Mr. Hershberger had been held in the community. He was laid to rest in the Coffee Creek cemetery surrounded by his family and many friends.
John Wertz Hershberger was born June 16, 1876, in Veedersburg, Indiana, and passed away August 16, 1937. He was educated in Indiana, graduated from Valparaiso College, attended Indiana State University and Indiana State Normal. Following this he taught for 15 years, holding the position of superintendent of the consolidated schools in Stone Bluff, Ind.; superintendent of schools in Hominy, Oklahoma, and principal of the Irving school in Bozeman, Mont.
On December 8, 1912, he was married to Maude Boone in Great Falls and they made their first home in Raynesford where he was principal of schools.
In 1913 they took a homestead near Carter where they were engaged in farming for 12 years. In 1925 they moved to their ranch near Coffee Creek where they have resided for the past 12 years.
Members of the immediate family who survive are his widow and three children, Nina, Elaine, and Vestal. He is also survived by a sister, Ann Hesler, of Veedersburg, Ind., a brother, Myrd Hershberger, of Danville, Ill.; a half sister, Olive Greeley, of Veedersburg; and a half brother, Mark Hershberger, Crawfordsville, Ind.
