George Leland was born in Painsdale, Oh in 1858. His family moved to the Fennville-Ganges area when he was a youngster. He married Bessie Hawley in 1886 and they had 3 children. George was a fruit farmer with farms in Ganges and Shelby. He also had a fruit package business in Fennville and shut it down when the Fennville Fruit exchange took over packing for area farmers. He was the assessor for the village of Fennville, a councilman and president in 1911. He held various Manlius Township offices and served 22
years on the Allegan County Board of Supervisors. He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1915, 1917 and 1919. In 1922 he won a seat in the Michigan Senate. He was serving his 6th term at the time of his death in 1934. On December 1, 1921 for the sum of $2,000. he sold 11.6 acres of lakeshore property to the county of Allegan for a recreational park. It is known as West Side County Park now. In 1922 he gave the village of Fennville their first public park. He purchased property east of Maple Street from Orrin Hutchins. Part of the land was platted off for building sites. 5 acres was set aside and donated by him as a park, now known as Memorial Paradise Park.
