Bjarne Bratås writes in 'Langs Lågen', 1982 the following:
"It was not a bad economy that made the people of Skjellerud go to America. Daughter Sunnev had her child out of wedlock in 1878, and the father of the child had emmigrated to America. It was a hard blow for Gudbrand and his people. He wanted to travel to find the father of the child and get him to marry his daughter. This closed and Gudbrand left the country with 1,200 kroner. When he came to New York, the question was whether he should sell the fiddle, and then pay the customs. No, said Gudbrand, she is for no use. When they still doubted, he had to play for them. It cost a lot to do, said Skjellerud'n, and nothing more about tlil was mentioned. The fiddle was made by Knut Steintjønndalen the Elder. In America, Skjellerud'n first settled in Wacesa county, Minnesota, but in the spring of 1880, the family moved to the rich and fertile Red River Valley in North Dakota. And as good and enterprising peasants, they did well there. If Gudbrand continued to play a lot in America, the statements are different. Peder Nelson writes (Hallingen 1938, p.104) that he traveled around the prairie states and held concerts and that it was said that he thawed a very small fortune in that way.
Torstein Odden writes (Spelemannsbladet 1967, no. 3) that Skjellerud'n did not become very well known as a musician in America, because he never traveled and held concerts. But many of those who knew him from Norway traveled long distances to hear him play. He was always welcoming and friendly, and he always brought out the fiddle and stroked some lively tunes. About the game and the statements are somewhat different. That may well always be the case.
The well-known fiddler Eivind Aakhus visited him many times in his old days (Aakhus: Memory from Norway and America 1932, p. 44). Gudbrand Skjellerud had a shocking end. One year he was driving grain to a mill in the nearest town, the horses ran out in front of him. He was thrown off the wagon and came under one wheel. After this he no longer became a health yperson and lay in bed for the rest of his days. He must have sat in bed and played, because many people came to visit and wanted to hear some beats ».

Gudbrand Skjellerud
Born 1818 Death 1901
Employment Musician Nationality Norway
Gudbrand Andresson Skjellerud (born 31 December 1818 on Børtnesøygardo or on Skjellerud in Nes, Buskerud, died 14 February 1901 in Dundee, Walsh County , North Dakota ) was a fiddler from Nes in Hallingdal . He settled on the farm Borge in Nore , Numedal and emigrated to the USA in 1879. He was married to Guri Olsdotter Ålton . He started playing the fiddle when he was 10 years old and was fifteen years old known as a good fiddler.
Skjellerud had much of its tradition after Harald Langåker, and also made a number of tunes himself. He became a central source for the Harding fiddle tradition in lower Hallingdal , and was the most important teacher of Tor Grimsgard . Skjelleruden often went down the valley and played with Ole Helgeson Kleiva , and also exchanged spells with Ola A. Strand and Myreguten from Ål .
Myllarguten heard Skjellerud at Kongsbergmarkedet and was impressed. Skjellerud is described as just as important for Hallingdal as Myllarguten was for Telemark.
There are several hayfields associated with him, especially the hall Skjelleruden , or fyken
