Jacob was born in Slidre, Valdres, Norway where he lived with his parents who were tenant farmers. He was a shoemaker by trade. In 1856 He immigrated with his family and settled in the Decorah, Iowa area. After marrying Annie Andersdatter Belsem on July 24, 1856, they rented a farm there. They moved to Minnesota, first to Fillmore County and later to Grant County in 1868. The Olsons had the first farm in Erdahl Township on the south shore of Pomme de Terre Lake. Jacob was one of the founders of the Pomme de Terre Evangelical Church, later known as Erdahl Lutheran Church.
