Alfred Surber "Sonny" Hare was the son of George Albert Hare and Marie (Surber) Hare. His middle name, Surber, was also his mother's maiden name.

Sonny's mother, Marie, was born in Switzerland and immigrated to Nebraska with her parents. She was a close friend of Marie Sandoz, who would later become Mari Sandoz, the Nebraska author.

Sonny's father, George, was Ranch Foreman at the Cravath Ranch south of Rushville, Nebraksa. He later had a ranch of his own close to The Cravath.

Sonny had an older sister, LaMona, and a twin sister, Carol. He grew up helping his father, and working on area Sandhills ranches.

He enlisted on 25 Feb 1942, and was honorably discharged 30 Aug 1945.
He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his service during World War II. After the war, he returned home and worked for area ranchers, Jake Herman and the Beguins.

He was killed in an automobile accident on 17 July 1949. Though he was not married and did not have children, he was greatly missed by those who loved him.
