He was active in community projects, was a member of the Church of Christ, Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce. And, he also was a Mason.

Douglas died unexpectedly on April 15, 1960 at Baptist Hospital after suffering a heart attack at Cain-Sloan clothing store where he was a floor-walking supervisor.

Survivors included his widow Lois, sons Bernard Shelton and John Shelton in Nashville, Hugh Shelton of Chattanooga, Tennessee and James Shelton at Jociton, Tennessee, sisters Mrs Paul Jones and Mrs Louise Hunter in Nashville and twenty grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on April 18th at Cosmopolitan Funeral Home, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
