Felix Sandoz; son of Paul and Anna Sandoz, and Esther Sandoz daughter of William and Susanne (Morier) Sandoz, were married April 10, 1907, at Grayson, Nebraska, and homesteaded twenty-two miles southeast of Hay Springs, south of the Paul Sandoz home.

They lived in a frame house about five years when their home burned. Their two sons, Clarence and Ollie, were born at this home. They lived with the Paul Sandoz family until their new home, a sod house was built, located one mile south of the home that was destroyed. Esther was a good homemaker and even then had a flower garden and raised and canned many vegetables and fruit. Blanche and Evelyn were born at the sod house and eight years later moved to the Fred Schmidt farm. Felix and Esther owned about 1200 acres of land on what is now the Sturgeon-Mills Ranch. They traded some of this land for sandhils land 25 miles southeast of Hay Springs and this is the ranch where the family grew up. They later sold the rest of the land to Sturgeon and bought more sandhills land. Florence was born at the New Ranch. The children all went to Cotton Ridge School.

Clarence passed away September 23, 1921, he suffered a broken leg and was on crutches several months, then had a ruptured appendix, and passed away at age 13 years at St. Joseph Hospital in Alliance.

Harley DeHaven and Blanche Sandoz were married December 7, 1929, at Hay Springs and lived all their married life 22 miles southeast of Hay Springs on a farm. Three children were born: Doris (Mrs. Gene Scott); Stanley and Dorrine (Mrs. Don Leedman).

Chester Trenkle and Evelyn Sandoz married October 2, 1923,? at Hilton in the Lutheran Church there and lived all of their married life on the Fred Schmidt farm. Tow sons: Allen and Dwain were born. Allen of Ames, Iowa, and Dwain, was dilled in a car-truck accident.

Ollie married Gail DeWitt at the Methodist Church in Rushville May 22, 1939. They have one son, David. They lived onland owned by Minnie Cravath for many years. Sold this land to Constant Sandoz and bought a ranch at Merriman and they now live at Valentine.

Buford Fisher and Florence were married at Alliance October 6, 1940, and have lived most of their married life on the Felix Sandoz ranch. When first married, they lived at Ft. Robinson, where Buford was a Broc Rider and he also was in the Navy in World War II. Three children were born, Karen (Mrs. Vance Nelson); Gary of Crawford and Wayne of Hay Springs.

Felix and Esther retired in the 40s to Rushville and enjoyed life with their many relatives, friends and family.


Family of Esther Sandoz

William Constant Sandoz was born October 10 1860, at Aigle Vaud, Switzerland to Ami Frederic Sandoz and Henrietta Ida Desoulavy. William Sandoz married Susanne Morier (born April 7, 1864).

One daughter, Esther was born October 22, 1886, at Aigle Vaud, Switzerland. When a very young girl, her mother became very ill and was never able to come to the U.S.A. and died in Switzerland in 1897, when Esther was 11 years old. Esther lived with different relatives until she was 19 and then came to America, arriving in Hay Springs, Nebraska in the spring of 1905.

William Sandoz came to America to join his brother, Jules and family. William crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the "Normandie" and was on the ocean for twenty-seven days. William came to Rushville on April 6, 1890, on Easter Sunday and homesteaded on Box Butte Creek near the Sturgeon land. He married Lena Pochon at Rushville. Lena was born October 19, 1868, at Cortallis, Switzerland to Louis and Eugenia Pochon.

William died May 14, 1926, and was buried at the Swiss Beguin Cemetery.

William's paternal grandparents were Pierre Frederic Sandoz and Marie Therise Mauley Sandoz. William's brothers and sisters are as follows: Jules A. (Old Jules) born April 21, 1857 and married Mary Fehr (4th wife); Allie (died by accident at school); William born October 10, 1860 married Susanne Morier and Lena Pochon; Elvina born January 26, 1862 married John Burrows; Paul E. born October 29, 1863 married Fannie Pochon and Lydia Wagner; George Emile born November 11, 1864 and married Helen Forestier; Henri F. born November 29, 1868 and married Mathilda Schmid; A. Ferdinand born August 29, 1872 and married Marie Russell.

When William lived near Box Butte Creek, he usually had three large gardens in which he raised many vegetables and in the fall he would haul the produce to town in his wagon to sell. He and his wife fed their family and many of the neighbors with food from his gardens.

Paul Frederic Sandoz was born April 27, 1846, at Paquier Canton, Neuchatel, Switzerland to Pierre Sandoz I and Marie Mauley Sandoz.

Pierre Sandoz was a country doctor and Veterinary. His hobby was walking in the woods to collect and dig roots and brew then for his medicines.

Paul Sandoz married Anna Schwaar on August 26, 1876 in Switzerland. Anna Schwarr was born August 26, 1856.

Peter was born April 13, 1881 in Switzerland; Felix was born June 17, 1882 in Switzerland; Gustava was born November 3, 1885, in Switzerland; Jenny was born December 25, 1886 in Switzerland.

This family came to U. S. A. April 6, 1890, and arrived in Rushville on Easter Sunday. On April 7, 1890, they applied for their citizenship. They came across the ocean on the "Normandie". They settled near the Niobrara River on the south side near his brother Louis who also came to the U.S.A. at the same time.

Four more children were born to Paul and Anna here: Lena was born November 4, 1891; Henry was born December 4, 1894; Constant was born July 10, 1896 and Marguarite was born March 2, 1899.

Paul died October 18, 1930 at his home and is buried in the Swiss Beguin Cemetery. Anna died November 14, 1923 at their home and is also buried at the Swiss Beguin Cemetery. There was a large group of Swiss immigrants that came to Rushville at the same time. Felix acquired land on the south side of his father's land, and in later years he sold that land and bought land down in the Sand Hills where Florence and Buford Fisher still live.
