Anna Jacqueline L. Diggs

Anna Jacqueline L. Diggs, 83, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville.

She was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, on January 28, 1926, to Elizabeth Dandridge Martin and Harold Martin Sr.

Mrs. Diggs married Julian Bivins Sr. of Newark, New Jersey, and later, W. Thomas Diggs of New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Living in Metuchen, New Jersey, she was employed as a surgical nurse for 28 years at Roosevelt Hospital in Edison, New Jersey, before retiring and moving to Charlottesville in 1989.

Mrs. Diggs was of the Christian faith, and was an active member of the churches to which she belonged, including choir, missionary society, and outreach ministries. Mrs. Diggs was an avid traveler all her life, her favorite places being Bermuda and the Mediterranean coast.

Mrs. Diggs is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Julian and Beverly Bivins of Charlottesville; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Stewart of Somerville, New Jersey; three brothers, James "Sonny" Martin of Plainfield, New Jersey, Harold Martin of Murphy, Texas, and Ronald Martin of San Dimas, California.

She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Alvin Stewart of Somerville; loving nieces and nephews, godchildren, and life-long friends.

Mrs. Diggs had very special friends and family who blessed her life in many ways.

A Celebration of New Life was held Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1042 Preston Avenue, Charlottesville, Virginia. The Reverend Sherry Hardwick Thomas officiated.

Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at The Hillside Cemetery, 1401 Woodland Avenue, Scotch Plains, New Jersey. The Reverend Doctor Ronald L. Owens Sr. Pastor, New Hope Baptist Church, Metuchen, New Jersey, officiated.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to benefit the Ministry with the Aging, 1042 Preston Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22903, or to a preferred charity which serves the elderly.
