Robert the son of Robert E. Henneberg and Bernice A. Henneberg of San Francisco enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 16, 1965. He was assigned to Company H, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
During Operation Franklin I, advancing eastward though the hamlet of Tam Hoi in Binh Son District, several shots from a high powered rifle were fired at the Marines moving forward in a column. An enemy bullet struck LCpl Henneberg causing his instantaneous death.
