Alaric Mann Bushnell was born in Starksboro, VT on July 5, 1819 to James and Roxanne "Polly" (Pond) Bushnell. Alaric first married Sarah R. Moody, born about 1823 and died in Au Sable Forks, N.Y. on 2/25/1854. Two children were born to them: Harriet L. Bushnell born 1/8/1844 and James Jacob Bushnell born 8/21/1850.

Alaric married Jane Lathrop, at Au Sable Forks, NY on 5/14/1854. Jane was born in Chelsea, VT on 5/9/ 1834 to Azel and Susan (Ellis) Lathrop. They had three children: Sarah Lathrop Bushnell born 8/18/1857, Ruth A. Bushnell born 2/10/1858; and Henry Lathrop Bushnell born 7/31/1861.

Alaric learned to work iron under Ira and Nile Bushnell, and for a number of years was superintendent in the Rogers Iron Works in Au Sable Forks, N.Y. He was of medium height, broad shoulders, and of great strength, and had some ability as a violinist.*

He died in Buffalo, N.Y. 4/4/1885.
