The first family immigrant may have been Edward Van Sant Hood, father of John George Hood, who emigrated from England in 1803 and settled originally in Nazareth, PA. The old family name may have been spelled Huth or Hod.

His death certificate gives parents' names as Henry Huth and Kahema Beishey. He was listed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses as George Huth. Brother Abraham Huth's 1914 obit lists surviving brother John G. Huth of Dingman's Ferry, and sister Julian Kressler's 1919 obit lists John Huth. Brother Samuel Huth also adopted the surname Hood after 1860.

During the Civil War, John George Hood was a sumpter (mule team driver) hauling ammunition to gun batteries of the Union Army, and was present at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war, he settled in Dingman's Ferry, PA, where he opened a cobbler shop. He Also owned a homestead farm outside Milford, PA.

John G. (which is what he was called by his family) was one of the original board members of the Delaware Cemetery association which was incorporated in 1880.

John and Charlotte (Lottie) had a child Susan Charlotte who was aged 2 in the 1870 United States Census, however she does not appear in the 1880 census, only her younger brother (John) Van Sant Hood.
