George Peter Burkhart was a son of Peter (1785-1868) and Rachel (Owen) Burkhart (1793-1832) of Knox County, Tennessee and a 2nd generation American. When his grandfather & namesake, Peter Burckhardt (1751-1830 or 1834), 1st arrived from the Pfungstadt-Hessen region of Germany in 1767 aboard the ship "Sally", he was only 16 yrs. of age. He fought in the Revolutionary War, married a total of three times, had at least eight children, and changed the spelling of his last name from Burckhardt to Burkhart, although his children, grandchildren, etc. have used many variations of the Burkhart last name up to the present day. George Peter was the 7th of eight children of Peter and Rachel Burkhart who had married on Jan 11, 1811 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Most of the Burkhart children settled in both Sullivan and Knox counties, for the most part, although others lived in Union and other counties as well. George Peter Burkhart, next to the youngest, was b.Jan 11, 1822 in Knox County, Tennessee. He met and courted, then wed Nancy J. Foust (b.1828) of Knox Co., on Mar 19th, 1847. One child was borne of their marriage, John L. Burkhart. Nancy died before 1850 and would have been laid to rest in Knox County. He married his 2nd wife, Rebecca E Shipe, on Oct 4, 1851 in Knox, Tennessee. They had six children that I have found. They were:
Cordelia, b.1852, d.1892. Married William E. Anderson.
Henrietta, b.1854. She moved to Texas and lived with her sister, Narcissus, until her death in 1921.
Wiley, b.1856-1940, married twice to 1st Adelicia Flora and 2nd to Martha C. and had a total of 7 children
Rachel Orlena, b.1858, possibly married Mr. Gideon Groves,
George J, b.1860, and
Narcissa A, b.1865, married Charles Luther McKinney, moved to Texas @1888. She d.1946.

George was a farmer all of his life, per the 1880 US Census. His beloved Rebecca died on June 18th, 1891 at the age of 67. She was buried at Union Cemetery at Ritta, Knox County. George followed her within six months, dying just 2 days before his 80th birthday, on Jan 9, 1892. He was also buried at Union Cemetery, at Ritta, Knox County, Tennessee near his wife for eternity.

I have only recently become aware that he was married twice (via familysearch.org). Any information regarding his 1st wife, Nancy Foust, (date of death & place of interment) would be greatly appreciated.
