Born in Jackson Township, Sainte Genevieve County, she graduated from Stoney Point School. She began her 48-year teaching career in county schools and, over the years, served at the Pine Hill, Carron, Clement, Jackson Schools, and at the Bloomsdale Elementary School. In addition, she held teaching positions in Saint Loius, Saint Francois and Jefferson Counties. She retired in 1968 from the Hillsboro Public School System. Her love of education was also self-directed. She continued her studies, enrolling in Washington and Saint Louis Universities, Missouri State Normal School and it's later incarnation of Southwest Missouri University. On 3 Aug 1998, Commissioner of Education Robert E. Bartman presented the "Pioneers in Education" Award to Irene Bockenkamp Primo in recognition of her 48 years of service. The DESE spokesman said, "She represents the finest qualities in public school teachers, leadership, dedication and determination. She is one of the shining lights in the history of Missouri public education." She was a member of the Missouri Retired Teacher's Association and Saint Mary's Chapter #338 Eastern Star.
