He was the second of seven children of James and Louise (Loos) Lavender and also the second of 22 grandchildren of Deer Harbor pioneers Oberlin T. and Sarah (Cadwell) Loos.

Except for his time in the army, Eddie lived his entire life on Orcas Island. He enlisted in the Army in World War II, first in a cavalry unit and later in the paratroopers where he was part of the Allied Forces invasion in France. His time in the Army gave him a lifelong love of flying and he enjoyed flying small aircraft after he earned his pilot license.

He married Betty in November of 1949. They had a daughter Louise. Ed and Betty were active members of Orcas Island Community Church.
