Leading Wren Joan Ashburner, WRNS, 45374 served as a radio mechanic attatched to the Fleet Air Arm establishment, HMS Merlin,at Donibristle, near Inverkeithing, Fife. She was the daughter of George Bankes Ashburner and Ada Margaret Ashburner, of Hayes, Bromley, Kent. She died in the line of duty on a test fight along with Leading Wren Margaret Batchelor and the pilot of the aircraft, Chief Petty Officer Airman Frederick E Andrews, RNZR. Leading Wrens Ashburner and Batchelor were buried at Dumfermline (Douglas Bank) Cemetery with military honours after a funeral service at St Andrew's Church, Rosyth.
