Frederick was the son of Almeron Newman.
The 1870 U.S. Census lists Frederick as the owner of a "saw mill" in Portland, Ionia, Michigan.
The 1880 U.S. Census in Portland, Ionia, Michigan enumerates his occupation as "milk peddler."
He and his wife Emma (born N.Y, 1845) were the parents of: Grace was born in 1873, sons Chase (1872) married Emma Young, Almeron (1876) and Clay (1873), daughter Ruby E. (1883) and Minnie.

Dr. Chase Newman was a professor at Michigan Agricultural College (M.S.U.). He served on the 1st City Council in E. Lansing, Michigan and developed a system of numbering buildings within the city and created an official map of East Lansing.
