Interment to follow in the church cemetery.

A.M. Sheridan Sr., mortician, dies at 81
Andrew M. Sheridan Sr. got his start in the funeral business by working at his uncle's funeral home in Louisa.
When Andrew M. Sheridan Sr. bought Gooch Funeral Home in Kents Store in 1955, he became more than just a business owner to rural Fluvanna County.
He served as a counselor for grieving families; for several years he was the rescue squad, using his hearse as an ambulance; and in a pinch, he could deliver a baby -- more than 50 of them in fact.
"If someone needed something, Dad was available," said a son, A.M. "Mel" Sheridan Jr. of Kents Store. "He wanted to help people and he was good at it. He was the guy you could call if you had a problem."
After owning the funeral home for several years, Mr. Sheridan changed the name to Sheridan Funeral Home. In 2005, he received the Golden License Award from the Virginia Funeral Directors Association for 50 years of service.
Mr. Sheridan, who got his start in the funeral business by working at his uncle's funeral home in Louisa County, died Monday at a Richmond-area hospital after a period of declining health. He was 81.
"He was a great person to his community, his church and Fluvanna County as a whole," said retired Fluvanna Sheriff W. Gordon Richardson. "He had a great personality . . . and was the life of a party. He was just that type of person."
Mr. Sheridan enjoyed working with people. He rarely met a person he didn't like, and he could crack a joke that brought levity to any situation.
When he was dealing with families that had suffered the loss of a loved one, he provided the comfort and care the survivors needed, his son said. "He was able to put your mind at ease and make you feel a part of our family."
Mr. Sheridan, who dropped out of school in the fifth grade to help his father work the family farm during World War II, was instrumental in the founding of the Kents Store Volunteer Fire Department and the Fluvanna County Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Throughout his life, Mr. Sheridan, a native of Louisa County, was heavily involved in athletics in Fluvanna. He played and coached in recreation leagues and volunteered to drive the bus transporting athletic teams to events. That in turn led him to drive a regular school-bus route for 24 years.
In addition to his son, Mr. Sheridan's survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane Sheridan; two other sons, H.F. "Frankie" Sheridan and John "Mike" Sheridan, all of Kents Store; two daughters, Mary Annie S. Henley of Tabscott and Sandra S. Ross of Richmond; a brother, H. Elwood Sheridan of Mineral; a sister, Dorothy S. Powers of Richmond; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church, 5371 Venable Road, in Kents Store. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
