BIOGRAPHY

Leta Luella Browne was born on August 13, 1898, to Luella Bash Browne, age 34, and Frank J. Browne, age 37, in Olympia, Thurston County, Washington. She was the sixth child born to her mother. Her older siblings were Albert F. (1886), Bryant H. (1889), R. William (1891), Edwin C. (1893) and Lowell E. (1896). Her father Frank was the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Washington.

Leta Luella Browne graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1919. She was a physics major.

Leta married Gilbert Munger Wright in about 1923. Leta and Gilbert had two children, Philip Browne Wright, born April 16, 1924 and Barbara E. Wright (age 3 in 1930 census). Leta and Gilbert divorced, and Gilbert remarried (Margaret Royster) on December 24, 1936.

Leta was later married for about a year to a Mr. Wallace (of the Wallace Readers Digest family). He was an ambassador. They lived in Washington D.C. (He died of a heart attack in 1946/7.)

Leta served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II and then taught English in the Calfornia public school system for many years.

In 1945, Leta married James Hollis Deery. They remained married until Hollis' death on August 15, 1964.

Leta Deery died in Missoula, Montana, December 19, 1984. She was interred with her beloved husband James Hollis Deery at the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Mateo, California.

Leta Browne Deery, 86, of Missoula, died of natural causes Wednesday in a local hospital. She was born Aug. 13, 1898, in Olympia, Washington. She served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II and then taught English in the Calfornia public school system for many years. She lived in Pacific Grove and Oakland, California, before moving to Missoula two years ago. Her husband, Hollis Deery, preceded her in death in 1961 [sic]. Survivors include a daughter Barbara E Wright, Missoula; a sister, Evelyn B Mann, Concord, California; and nine grandchildren. No services are planned at this time. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Squire Simmons & Carr Funeral Home.

Leta's first husband, Gilbert Munger Wright, was born March 17, 1901 in Kansas. His father was Harold Bell Wright. His mother's maiden name was Long. Gilbert married Margaret Royster Wright on December 24, 1936. Gilbert died at age 65, on April 25, 1966 in Malibu, Los Angeles County, California. He was survived by his wife Margaret Royster Wright.

Leta's son Philip Browne Wright married Shirlee. They had four children Diana, Kathryn (born April 15, 1949), Virginia Ann and David Michael. They divorced and he married Claudia. With Claudia he had two children, Maria and John. Philip Wright died in 1979 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Claudia died October 22, 2009. Philip's daughter Kathryn became a physician. Sadly, she died at age 61 on April 26, 2010.

Leta's daughter Barbara E. Wright earned her PhD in developmental biology. She married Herman Moritz Kalcker (born March 26, 1908). They had three children Sonja, Nina and Niels (named after Niels Bohr). They were divorced sometime before 1968. Herman died May 17, 1991. Niels passed on about 2010.

The biography was written by Linda Kelty. James Hollis Deery was her grandfather's first cousin. Her father knew Hollis well. Her mother once met Hollis and said that he was "a very nice man".
