Anna Marie Joho Pflug was born in Gebweiler, Alsace-Lorraine when it was in Germany. She and her family spoke German. She was the oldest of 4 children-Anna, Josephine, Eugene & Henry. The whole family immigrated to the US in July 21, 1906, arriving in NYC on the steamer ship "La Provence" which had sailed from Le Havre, France. She said it took a week to sail across the Atlantic. They came in steerage which she said was very cramped and unpleasant-smelling!

They settled in Paterson, NJ at first, eventually moving to Elizabeth, NJ so her father Alfred could work at the Singer Sewing Machine Factory. She eventually worked at Singer's as well.

She met Harry Gustave Pflug and married him in May, 1919. They had 3 children.
