He graduated as an A. M. from the University of Nashville, Tenn., in 1842 and as an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1848. During the war between the states, he was surgeon and medical director of the hospitals of the Confederate Sates Army in the Department of Tennessee. He later held the position of profession of surgical and pathological anatomy in the Medical College of Atlanta, Georgia and was emeritus professor of medicine in Baylor University College of Medicine, Dallas. The Confederacy in February 1863 appointed him Medical Director of Hospitals of the Department and Army of Tennessee.
