Doug was born in Okeechobee, FL, on October 28, 1927, the son of Henry and Dorothy Malsberger. He attended Leon High School in Tallahassee and was selected All State in baseball, football and basketball. Doug was elected to the 1944 All Southern Football Team.

After Leon he was awarded a football scholarship to become a Vanderbilt Commodore. He was a member of the fabled 1948 Commodore team whose record has yet to be matched at Vanderbilt. After serving in the Army, he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and practiced throughout the southeast.

He retired at age 62 to devote more time to family, friends and golf. While sports were his passion, his family was his love. Doug was preceded in death by his wife Lee.
