The following information is from Nancy (Cowley) Weise:

Clyde Ervin Groat of Stanberry, WI. died on Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Sept. 30, 1915, to Perry and Pearl Groat. Clyde served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a catcher for the Duluth Dukes baseball team and also coached fastpitch softball in St. Paul as well as girls’ slowpitch. He worked as a plater for computer manufacturers Alltec in California and Unisys in St. Paul, retiring in 1981.

Renowned as “Squeezebox Clyde,” he was an expert on the accordion and had recorded his music on CDs. He and his band were well known throughout the region. In addition to his music, he loved fishing, bowling, hunting, and trapping.

He married Stacey Dallos on Oct. 29, 1966.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion.

Clyde is survived by his wife, of Stanberry; his children, Joyce Moore of Escondito, Calif., and Vernon, Keith, and Melvin, all of Bakersfield Calif.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Meier; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Chuck, Hank, Dale, Glen, and Lyman.

The funeral service was held at noon on Monday, May 9, at Namekagon Congregational United Church of Christ in Earl. Pastor Jim Faunce-Zimmerman officiated.

Military rites were accorded by the Hayward Veterans Council.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home in Hayward and again on Monday at the church for one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Earl Cemetery at a later date.

Casket bearers were Bill and Lyman Groat, Leonard Johnson, Myron Lindell, Omar Sprenger, and George Timblin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society or to the Namekagon Congregational Church.
