Gladys Fowler was the only daughter of Maynard William Fowler and Ida York Lott. Her father was a well-known attorney and judge in Goliad, Texas. Her parents moved to Goliad in 1896 not long after their marriage and lived there the rest of their lives. It is likely that Gladys was born in Goliad.

Gladys married Harry Albert Merrill in 1921. Harry was born Albert Douglas Merrill, but he used both names during his lifetime. By the 1930 Census, the couple was living in Glendale, California, with their only child – Douglas Maynard Merrill who was born in 1922. Harry was the proprietor of a chain retail store. By the 1940 Census, the family had moved to San Diego, California, where they continued to live until Harry's death in 1957.

Gladys died in Marin County, California, in 1983. Her son, Douglas, was also living in northern California. It is likely that she lived close to him to be close to his family and her grandchildren.
