EM2 John Thomas Nelson, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Washington, Illinois.

Electrician's Mate Second Class(EM2) John Thomas Nelson was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Navy, EM2 Nelson served our country until October 27th, 1967 in Binh Hoa, South Vietnam. He was 25 years old and was married. It was reported that John died from multiple fragmentation wounds. His body was recovered. John was born on January 30th, 1942 in Washington, Illinois. EM2 Nelson is on panel 28E, line 085 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 6 years.

The first killed-in-action casualty for HCU ONE occurred on 27 October in the vicinity of Tan An, RVN, when EM2(DV) J. T. NELSON, USN, 528 85 09, MMC(DV) L. J. TRUJILLO, USN, 489 81 69, and SFP2(DV) J. T. LINSCOTT, USN, 685 47 16, were hit by hostile fire while searching for the body of a U.S. Army officer. Petty Officer NELSON's wounds were instantly fatal. Petty Officers TRUJILLO and LINSCOTT although seriously wounded, survived and are recovering during prolonged hospitalization in the United States.

He served as an Electricians Mate 2nd Class, with the Harbor Clearance Unit 1, US Naval Forces, United States Navy, Vietnam.

He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for his Combat Related Wounds, The National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
