Born Dec. 4, 1959, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Verda Yancey and John Lee Orchard, he was the only son and oldest brother to three sisters. Larry graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1968 and enlisted in the Naval Reserve serving in communications and doing a tour in Vietnam. He was able to travel to several parts of the world in the Navy and often spoke of his experiences and the numerous lifelong friendships he formed. He took great pride in reaching the rank of chief petty officer. All totaled, his commitment to service spanned 26 years.
