The Honorable Eugene O'Dunne sat on the Supreme Bench of Baltimore City for nearly 30 years. Despite the racism of the times, O'Dunne was known for his rulings in favor of desegregation. O'Dunne was the presiding judge in Murray v. Maryland, argued by future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall for Amherst graduate Donald G. Murray, who had been denied entry to the University of Maryland Law School. O'Dunne ruled that Murray had been rejected solely on the basis of race and ordered the University to admit him. Murray became the first black graduate of the University's law school in 1938.
