Thurman W. Adkins, 92 To Be Buried Here Thurs.

Thurman W. Adkins, a longtime lawyer and former state legislator, died Tuesday, April 29, 1997. He was 92.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church of Shamrock with the Rev. Ken Cole, pastor, and the Rev. Julie Adkins of Austin officiating. Burial will be in the Wheeler Cemetery at Wheeler by Wright Funeral Directors.

Mr. Adkins was born in Lafayette, Upshur County. He entered North Texas Teacher's College at the age of 16. He received his bachelor of science degree from North Texas State University at Denton four years later.

He taught school for a couple of years before entering the University of Texas Law School. During his first year of law school, he ran for the state Legislature in his district. At the age of 23, he became the youngest member of the Legislature. He served two terms.

While in law school, Mr. Adkins also served on the Texas Law Review and was a member of the Tejas Club, an honorary law fraternity. He completed law school in 1930, moved to Wheeler in 1932 and formed a partnership with R.H. Forrester. He served as the Wheeler County attorney for four years.

He married Jerome S. Stanley in 1933 at Sayre, Okla. She died in 1988.

Mr. Adkins moved to McLean in 1935 and to Shamrock in 1938. He formed a partnership with H.B. Hill and served as city attorney for about 10 years. He then moved his family to a cattle ranch in South Dakota, where they lived for a short time before moving back to Texas.

In 1952, he returned to Shamrock to reform the partnership with Mr Hill. After Mr. Hill's death, Mr. Adkins ran the law practice alone until 1979, when he formed a partnership with Jim Fling.

He retired in 1985 after practicing law for 65 years, spending 35 years of those years in Shamrock.

Mr. Adkins was a member of First United Methodist Church of Shamrock, the Shamrock Booster's Club, the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. He also was a member of Rotary International and had received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for many years.

Survivors include a son, Thurman J. Adkins of San Antonio; two daughters, Noel Boyd of Shamrock and Lynda Stephenson of Edmond, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be to First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
