Johnson was born in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, the son of Johnson Sr. and Sarah (Woodward) Fisher. He was listed on the Final Dawes Roll as a Cherokee by blood. He spent a lot of time away at school, but was at home during the summers. As an adult, he married Darkie Tadpole and they were the parents of two daughters, Elizabeth and Nancy. Sadly, Darkie died in childbirth with her next child and left Johnson a widower with two little girls. He remarried Rachel Sequoyah and she helped with his daughters until their divorce. After that, Johnson sent his girls to be raised by separate grandmothers. He later became the father of two sons, Ross Johnson Fisher and Ben Fisher. Johnson died in 1944 and was buried in the Chouteau Cemetery near his sister, Ella, and her family.
