Skoda Dies in Johnstown, Veteran of 2 World Wars
Johnstown - Stephen M. Skoda, 71, of 5 Grand street, a retired marine veteran of both World wars, died at 7 a.m. yesterday at the Johnstown Hospital, where he had been a patient since Sunday.
Born Jan. 6, 1891 in Kuty, Slovakia, he came to the United States and Johnstown about 50 years ago. He had been falling health for the past week.
Mr. Skoda entered the U.S. Marine Corps on May 9, 1912, and served 30 years before retiring as a first lieutenant on Oct. 1, 1942. He served in various theaters of war and received a Purple Heart with an oak leaf cluster.
He returned to Johnstown in 1959 from Vallejo, Calif., and made his home with his nephew, John J. Zemanek, 5 Grand street. His late wife, Mrs. Sarah Skoda, died in 1958. He was a member of St. Anthony's Church.
Survivors are three nephews, John J. Zemanek and Stephen M. Zemanek, both of Johnstown, and Joseph A. Zemanek of Detroit, Mich., and a niece, Mrs. Mary Gossel of Detroit.
Friends may call at the family home, 5 Grand street, after 7 p.m. today. A prayer service will be held at the home at 9 a.m. Friday followed at 9:30 a.m. by a requiem high mass at St. Anthony's Church. Burial will be in St. Anthony's cemetery. Parish rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. tomorrow. Arrangements are by the Frederick W. Barter funeral home.
Note: Per Roman Catholic Church records of Kuty, Slovakia, Stephanus Skoda was born January 4, 1891 to Thomas Skoda and Maria Kubina. He was baptized January 5, 1891.
