Hazel was the daughter of Eugene L. and Annie M. (Hatch) Spencer. She had siblings. Hazel was raised in Amesbury. She was a member of Amesbury High School class of 1924. Hazel's parents divorced in 1911 when she was five. There's no record as to where Hazel and her siblings lived after their parent's divorced. She married Charles L. "Carl" Buttrick, of New York state on August 20, 1928 in Sandown, New Hampshire. They had one child: Carlene V. (Buttrick) Demerit. During the early years of their marriage Hazel and Carl lived in Amesbury. Hazel was a hair dresser. At one point she had her own parlor.
Hazel and Carl retired to East Hampstead, New Hampshire. In 1978 they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. On August 10, 1981 Hazel died at The Parkland Medical Center in Derry of natural causes, cardiac-pulmonary arrest and ventricular fibrillation. At the time of her death she was seventy-five. When Hazel died was just ten days away from celebrating her fifty-third anniversary with Carl.
