Ethel was born in Glenburn, Maine. She graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in 1910 as a teacher. In 1912, she married Harrison E. Morton in Belfast, Maine and they moved to Lowell, Massachusetts where all of their children were born. After the birth of their last child, they moved to Winsted, Connecticut where they spent the remainder of their lives together.
